Communication Specialist, REDD+ Readiness

The Department of Forestry’s REDD+ Office is currently implementing a project dealing with the international forestry and climate change mechanism known as REDD+, i.e., “Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and forest Degradation.” This project will assist the Government to build a national REDD+ program and national strategy, and involves coordination with other projects and sectors.

A technical assistance team is working with the DOF REDD+ Office on this project. We are seeking an experienced Lao national communication specialist to work part-time, providing up to the equivalent of seven months of full-time work over the next 14 months.


  • With other team members and other relevant projects, develop a communications and outreach strategy for the project to reach a wide and diverse set of stakeholders, from local to national, regional, and international levels;
  • Working with the REDD+ Office and the information technology adviser, develop and maintain a Web-based platform for sharing information and coordinating REDD+ activities and developments in the country on a continuous basis;
  • Assist in the design and production of culturally appropriate media and information, education, and communication materials, to ensure an inclusive REDD+ preparatory process and outcomes;
  • Provide technical guidance and operational support in the preparation of materials, such as newsletters, factsheets, brochures, short videos, conference proceedings, etc., in both Lao and English, to raise awareness of stakeholders on REDD+ activities and issues; and
  • Assist other team members to prepare technical and policy briefs and presentations for Government officials attending regional and international meetings on REDD+ and related issues.
  • Editing of documents in Lao and English 

Qualifications and expertise needed:

  • Lao National;
  • Undergraduate degree or higher in journalism, communication, broadcasts, and/or news media;
  • At least 5 years of professional experience working in communications, broadcasts, and/or new media, including development of original materials and high-quality editing of the work of others in Lao and English;
  • Experience working with website design and updating websites;
  • Fluent in both English and Lao;
  • Prior experience working on environmental and natural resource management projects is highly desirable.
